The Toronto Maple Leafs put out a strong effort on Wednesday night, defeating the Utah Mammoth 5-3 to extend their winning streak to three.
Speaking to media after the game, Auston Matthews said he was proud of how the team showed up on Wednesday night, diving into some of what they did well to secure the victory.
“I thought we competed really well,” he said. “I just felt like we had good rhythm tonight, good flow. All four lines were playing hard, competing, creating chances, defending well. Good to get that two points.”
It was a solid game for Matthews himself, who gave Toronto their first lead of the game in the second period with his eighth goal of the year. After a slow start to the year, Toronto’s captain is now on a three-game point streak, with three goals and an assist across that stretch. Asked about the strength of his recent play, Matthews said he’s feeling good about how things are going right now.
“I think in the last week or so, I like where my game’s been at,” he shared. “Good opportunities, good chances throughout each game, and just want to keep that going. Play well defensively, be responsible. … I just want to be good on both ends of the ice, get our opportunities, and try and capitalize on them when they come.”
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs held a ceremony for John Tavares before Wednesday’s game, in recognition of him reaching the 500 goal milestone last week. Tavares then went on to score a crucial go-ahead goal for Toronto in the third period. After the match, Matthews spoke on what it means to play alongside such a seasoned veteran, and how glad he was to see him celebrated for his achievements.
“I think it’s a huge honour to play with a guy like that who has accomplished so much in his career,” Matthews said. “Can’t say enough great things about him, the kind of professional person he is and what he brings to our team. So it’s always fun to celebrate people like that. Really nice moment there before the game, and he played great for us tonight.”
Now on a three-game win streak for the first time this season, the Maple Leafs look to keep the good times rolling in the face of a back-to-back this weekend. Toronto will first host the Boston Bruins on Saturday, then the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, wrapping up this week’s homestand.
