A couple of Toronto Maple Leafs have moved up the franchise record books.
During the team’s clash with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, Toronto captain Auston Matthews scored his 22nd goal of the season early in the second period, beating Penguins netminder Joel Blomqvist to tie the game at three.
It also marked the 390th goal of Matthews’ career, moving him past Hockey Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler for second all-time on the franchise’s goal-scoring list. The 27-year-old only trails former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin for the franchise record, as the legendary Swede potted 420 goals while wearing the blue and white.
In the first eight-plus seasons of his NHL career, Matthews has scored 30 or more goals every year, hitting the 40-goal mark six times. Last season, he set a new franchise record for goals in a single season, notching 69 goals while posting a career-high 107 points, earning the third Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy of his career.
It was the 50th point of the season for Matthews, who has certainly been having a slower season, production-wise, from what we’ve seen in the past from the former first-overall pick.
With 699 points in his career, the Arizona native is seventh in franchise scoring.
Forward Mitch Marner picked up the secondary assist on Matthews’ goal, giving him 57 helpers on the campaign. It was also the Markham native’s 714th point as a member of the Maple Leafs, passing the late George Armstrong for fifth in points in franchise history.
Another member of the core that helped carry the Leafs back into relevancy, Marner has been one of the best playmakers in the NHL. He’s posted 90 or more points three times, including a career-best 99 points during the 2022-23 season.
With 502 helpers in his career, Marner is fourth on the Leafs’ all-time assists list, 25 behind Sittler.
With 75 points in 59 games, 18 of which are goals, Marner leads the Leafs in scoring this season.
