Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube knows Calle Jarnkrok has another gear to his game, it’s just a matter of time.
Berube spoke to TSN’s Mark Masters after practice on Friday, as they prepare for the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night, and he touched on his expectations for Jarnkrok with the Stanley Cup Playoffs approaching.
“He’s still working to get his feet going under him. Been out a long time, working his way through it and he’s doing a good job. I do expect him to get to another level yet.”
Jarnkrok made his season debut on March 3 against the San Jose Sharks, after dealing first with a groin injury, and then a sports hernia that followed during the preseason. The speedy winger has dressed in just 15 games this season, and has only recorded one goal and five points. Jarnkrok is expected to skate alongside William Nylander and John Tavares on Saturday night.
One of Jarnkrok’s strengths is his versatility to be an option all over the lineup. While it’s a tough situation to be trying to find lineup combinations with just a couple weeks before the playoffs begin, but considering how much injury troubles the Maple Leafs have gone through this season, they don’t really have much choice.
Ideally, the Maple Leafs have Jarnkrok on a checking line in the bottom six, which could help build a shut-down line for a playoff matchup, but for now, with Max Pacioretty still sidelined, Jarnkrok’s getting a look with Tavares and Nylander, as Berube is hopeful playing with some skilled forwards will help him once again find his scoring touch. Jarnkrok reached 20 goals during the 2022-23 season.
Berube has some options when it comes to his top six, as Bobby McMann had been given a look for several games. Having some lineup flexibility could really come in handy for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it will be interesting to see how Berube plays the matchup game, or how creative he’ll get if he needs to find a spark during the first round.
For now, Jarnkrok gets a look in the top six, and Berube is going to be paying close attention to just how much of an impact he’s making being given more minutes, with better players.
