Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is feeling good with how things came together with the extension for goalie Anthony Stolarz.
Reports in the lead-up to camp from both sides gave good indications that things were trending in that direction, which came to fruition on Sunday when the team announced that the re-signing was done. Stolarz agreed to a four-year deal that carries an AAV of $3.75 million, which includes signing bonuses.
“We were hopeful to get something done. Having that certainty going into the season, he’s been good for us. He has lots of good hockey ahead of him,” Treliving said to reporters on Monday. “Like any deal, there’s give and take on both sides. The number is a good number for us and gives Anthony some security. Happy to get it done.”
Getting Stolarz to agree to a cap hit under $4 million is a testament to the work Treliving has done to instill a culture that makes players want to come to Toronto and win. It’s because of that fact that Stolarz was able to follow in John Tavares and Matthew Knies’ footsteps to want a deal that pays him fairly while also leaving some room for the team to make additional moves down the line.
Stolarz could have easily opted not to ink an extension now and bet on himself to get a large payday on the open market, but he wanted to remain a Leaf and was able to get something done with Treliving that was fair for everyone.
“It’s pretty special to be able to look out into the stands and see people with your jersey on,” Stolarz said. “I kind of thought coming in last year, I was a guy that was in the background a little bit. And just looking up and being able to see Stolarz jerseys and all the kids that had signs, it really makes you think back to when I was a kid going to New Jersey Devil practices and watching Martin Brodeur. I think just the loyalty and passion towards us is a huge part in all of us, and I’m looking forward to giving back.”
Now that the Stolarz extension is done, Treliving has some clarity in the crease at a time where there is some uncertainty. Joseph Woll remains away from the team due to a personal leave of absence, and Treliving had no new updates on when the netminder would be returning.
Meanwhile, James Reimer is signed on to a PTO to provide some insurance for the time being, but Treliving said that the veteran netminder won’t be travelling with the team to Muskoka.
“We know what James is,” he said. “We’re going to take the next couple of days to let him get his feet under him. You can never have too much depth at the position. With Joe’s situation, wanted to make sure we’ve got options.”
There is still some work for Treliving to do before the regular season gets underway as far as setting up the roster. The likes of Nick Robertson, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok have uncertain futures with the team and are currently on the outside looking in for the opening night lineup. The Leafs did make some additional cuts as 33 players were assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for their training camp, while Easton Cowan is skating on the fourth line alongside Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton.
Treliving will tackle those things when the time comes, but his focus for now is on enjoying the annual team trip to Muskoka and watching the Toronto Blue Jays compete in the ALDS against either the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox.
“Congrats to the Jays, eh? Good stuff to [John Schneider] and all the group down there. That’s awesome stuff and we look forward to watching next week,” he said.
