Bringing back John Klingberg would make zero sense for Toronto: Leafs Morning Take

Losers of two in a row, the Leafs will look to get back on track when they host the Dallas Stars at Scotiabank Arena.
All in all, it’s been a busy 24 hours or so for Leafs news. Just prior to the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take getting underway, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger put out a post on X that suggested that the Leafs were one of five to seven teams with interesting in signing John Klingberg. Is it Groundhog Day? The 32-year-old blue liner, who’s working his way back from hip resurfacing surgery, is expected to make a decision on his playing future over the next two weeks. For the record, we didn’t see a potential fit in Toronto.
After that, we dissected some of Brad Treliving’s comments from Monday. As he does more regularly that the previous general manager, Treliving fielded a round of questions from media members about the latest topics surrounding the team. Firstly, he acknowledged the struggling power play, but to be honest, he didn’t very much there. Then, he disclosed that Toronto’s looking for a centre on the trade market. While doing that, he did temper expectations on what they will end up acquiring. I liked that —by the way. Furthermore, he did share his thoughts as well on Auston Matthews suiting up for the United States at the Four Nations. At this point, barring another setback, it feels very likely that the Leafs captain will – in fact – be taking part. Personally, I hope this doesn’t come back to bite both parties in the rear end.
Meantime, we talked about the new lines, too. Most notably, Steven Lorentz will get the garden seat alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. That should be interesting to watch. Additionally, the Leafs were practicing the five forward PP again on Monday. We’ll see if they deploy it against Dallas. Joseph Woll will start. Max Pacioretty and Pontus Holmberg appear to be the healthy scratches up front. The Leafs have won seven straight meetings with the Stars.
Carter Hutton will sub in as co-host for Jay Rosehill on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us at 11 AM ET for a full recap of Leafs/Stars. Also, one of the best American goalies of all-time, Ryan Miller, will drop by the show.
