Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube singled out William Nylander for not doing enough through the opening three games of the season, and he expanded on their conversations ahead of Tuesday’s contest against the Nashville Predators.
Berube was unhappy about Nylander’s play and said he’d speak to the star winger, following Monday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings. Nylander has registered one goal and four points through three games, but has only generated three shots on goal.
“Yeah, they’re good. I mean, he always has good feedback, to be honest with you,” Berube said Tuesday morning. “Like, he sees things that maybe I don’t see, that he talks about where he’s at mentally and, you know, puck touches and stuff like that. These guys need the puck in their hands. They want to have the puck and sometimes they’re not getting it enough so they’re not feeling like they’re into the game. So those are the types of conversations we have most of the time, just different things like that. They’re good, though. I see his perspective, where he’s coming from, that maybe I don’t see. I’m not in his head and what he’s feeling and what I’m feeling and what I’m seeing. So I think they’re good conversations. It’s really good feedback for me, and I just want him to hear me and what I think.”
Nylander has been paired with John Tavares throughout the season, with Bobby McMann and Matias Maccelli alternating on the left wing through the first three games. Tavares spoke about Nylander’s impact on the team, and why he’s not particularly concerned about the 29-year-old’s start to the year.
“I’ve always said that’s why I think Willy does tremendously well in this market,” Tavares said of Nylander on Tuesday morning. “More than anyone, he’ll look at himself in the mirror and know that he can do more and he can play better. He’s obviously one of the best in the league, we’re very lucky to have him. We know what he’s capable of in his ability to respond.”
It’s worth keeping some perspective through the opening three games, as Nylander is one of the NHL’s best forwards and has often responded to the challenge posed during the regular season. Nylander, Tavares and Matias Maccelli will be paired together on Tuesday and Toronto’s 45-goal man from last year may be inclined to shoot with frequency, as the Maple Leafs look to snap a two-game losing skid.
