Toronto Maple Leafs head coach caught some attention for a clip that emerged of him following Saturday night’s road game against the Winnipeg Jets. Despite the Maple Leafs coming away with a 4-3 comeback win in overtime, the Leafs’ bench boss was seen giving it to an official as the team crossed the rink to return to the dressing room.
It’s hard to read his lips, but if nothing else, you can see that Berube was not thrilled with the call and wanted to get the last word in. While the clip hadn’t made the rounds in time for Saturday’s postgame media, the question came up following their morning skate on Monday. Berube confirmed that he was upset with what he believed to be was a soft call on Matthew Knies for a high stick, mostly due to the magnitude of the situation and how late in the game it was.
“Just the whole situation, I guess for me, where the game was at, the score, all of that plays into that,” Berube told reporters. “I thought it was a late, late call at that time of game for sure, so I wasn’t happy at all with it.”

While you can’t blame Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi for selling a call to try and get his team a late power play, Berube didn’t appreciate that the officials decided it was worthy of a late-game power play, especially when the stick didn’t appear to make clear contact with Vilardi’s face. Scott Laughton was also seen mocking a fan sitting behind the Leafs’ bench, pretending to cry after the Leafs scored the overtime winner. With the news that William Nylander may miss some time, Berube commented on his confidence in Laughton to step up and play higher in the lineup if the team needs him to.
“He’s been in those situations before,” Berube said. “He’s played wing, played more of a top-six role. He’s played some real good hockey for us, so he has an opportunity to go up there, but I can move other guys in and out, so we’ll see him move around if that’s the case.”
The Maple Leafs will begin a four-game homestand on Monday night when they host the Minnesota Wild.
