The Toronto Maple Leafs got hit by a last-minute attack from the injury bug. After losing William Nylander to a lower-body-injury for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, the Leafs left that game with Auston Matthews, Dakota Joshua, and Chris Tanev also hurt.
While Nylander is day-to-day and Matthews is a game-time decision, the picture surrounding Joshua’s injury remains a bit foggy, with head coach Craig Berube saying that it’s kidney-related.
“Joshua’s still in Detroit,” Berube told reporters at morning skate on Tuesday. “Whether he took a hit or went into the boards, it’s his kidney. It’s got blood and everything, so we need to see where he’s at too.”
Berube also confirmed that the injury to Tanev, which is lower-body, is a new one and unrelated to the one that he recently returned from.
A wave of injuries to key players might be the last thing this team needs right now, having built some positive momentum with wins in two of their last three games, but Berube says the team refuses to feel sorry for themselves and will be focused on banding together as a team to fight through whatever the injury outlook ends up being.
“Like I said, we talked this morning and everybody needs to step up, for sure,” Berube said. “We might have a couple of different younger guys in there tonight, but the team game is what it’s all about for us. When you have injuries like this, we don’t know if Matthews is playing tonight, we need a really strong team game tonight. The team game can get you through it.”
One of the younger guys Berube is referring to is Jacob Quillan, who the Leafs called up from the Toronto Marlies this morning. He will presumably suit up if Matthews isn’t good to go, perhaps even if he is, and he has Berube’s support.
“I love Quillan’s energy and his speed. He’s a young kid, but he could come in and provide what we need, I think tonight, and going forward. I think he’s getting close to being an NHL player and a full-time one with his ability. I mean, it’s a good opportunity for him tonight.”
Berube has yet to reveal an official starting lineup against the Devils.
