Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is taking the glass half-full approach and was complimentary of his team’s renewed efforts following a 2-1 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Joseph Woll was outstanding, recording 35 saves in the winning effort. Woll kept the Blue Jackets in check throughout the contest, and effectively shut the door during his fifth consecutive start. Easton Cowan tied the game with under four minutes remaining in regulation, before William Nylander registered the game-winning goal.
Berube pulled Woll from Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, a decision that the goaltender was incensed by. After Wednesday’s victory, Berube once again paid compliments to Woll.
“He looks sharp to me. He looks like he is on his toes and is seeing the play really well,” Berube said of Woll, post-game. “He is playing a lot of pucks. He is definitely sharp right now and on his toes. That is what I see right now. He’s seeing the puck and is making some really good saves.”
Cowan’s game-tying goal was the second of his NHL career. The 20-year-old continues to impress in a top-six role, featuring as one of the Maple Leafs’ most impactful players while paired with William Nylander and John Tavares.
“He is a young kid. There will be mistakes, but he learns from them, in my opinion. He listens, and he wants to get better. He has ice water in his veins. He doesn’t feel the pressure,” Berube said of Cowan. “He just plays. He knows his capabilities and what he can do.”
Toronto will need to continue to keep cool, calm and collected throughout a road trip that could change the tenor of the season. Berube preached about a glass half-full mentality during Tuesday’s practice, and the Maple Leafs are carrying some signs of positive momentum heading into Friday’s game against the Washington Capitals.
