Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube announced on Friday at practice that goaltender Anthony Stolarz is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
“It was good news overall,” Berube said via Jonas Siegel of The Athletic.
Stolarz tweaked something at some point during the first period of Thursday’s home game against the Anaheim Ducks, which the Maple Leafs went on to win 3-2. Joseph Woll came into the game to start the second period and stopped 19 of 20 shots to secure the win for the Maple Leafs. After the game, Woll was awarded the team belt, given to the team’s best or most impactful player in a winning effort.
Woll and Stolarz have formed the NHL’s best goalie tandem to start the season, both sitting in the league’s top-five for goals-against average and save percentage. Woll spoke to reporters about the situation after the game, citing the importance of staying healthy while also acknowledging the concern about losing one-half of the tandem.
“Obviously, I’m sad for him,” Woll told reporters following the win. “At the same time, I’ve got a job to do, and we have to kind of trigger that on, so I hope he’s alright.”
Woll is 8-3-0 on the season now with a .921 SV% and a 2.16 GAA, while Stolarz has a record of 9-5-2 complemented by a .927 SV% and a 2.15 GAA. The combined efforts between the two netminders in 2024-25 has given the Maple Leafs a level of stability in the crease that they haven’t had since the days of Curtis Joseph or Felix Potvin.
The Maple Leafs are reported to have recalled Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Marlies, and it’s likely we’ll see those two goaltenders split the starts between Saturday in Detroit and Sunday hosting Buffalo. Hildeby has started two games for the Maple Leafs, posting a 1-1 record with a .869 save percentage to begin the year, while Woll worked his way back from an injury.
