The Toronto Maple Leafs could be ready to welcome back one half of their goalie tandem in the coming days.
As the Maple Leafs hit the ice to prepare for Wednesday night’s tilt against the Utah Mammoth, Anthony Stolarz took to the starter’s net in what’s set to be his 11th start of the season, which is nearly a third of the action he got into last season. Cayden Primeau, who the Leafs grabbed off of waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes prior to the season, has been filling in as backup goaltender in the absence of Joseph Woll, but it seems like Woll’s return is imminent.
Woll has been away from the team since preseason, with very little information regarding why he was absent. Both general manager Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube have been tight-lipped about whatever ailment was keeping Woll away from the ice, and it’s remained that way since his return to the team about a week ago. Either way, Woll seems to be on the cusp of returning to action.
Woll appeared in 42 regular season games for the Leafs last season, putting up a record of 27-14-1 with a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.73 and a save percentage (SV%) of .909. He remained the Leafs’ backup into the postseason until Stolarz’s injury in Game 1 of the second round against the Florida Panthers, and while his playoff numbers didn’t impress at all, it was a tough situation for him to be thrown into.
The Maple Leafs have a back-to-back coming up this weekend, hosting the Boston Bruins on Saturday night before welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to town on Sunday night. Berube would not confirm if Woll would be back for the game on Sunday, but one way or another, he will be an extremely welcomed boost to a team that’s suffered without their 1B goaltender.
