On February 7th, 1976, Toronto Maple Leafs legend Darryl Sittler set an NHL record with 10 points in a single game against the Boston Bruins. Fast forward 50 years, and still, no player has been able to match that record.
Ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Buffalo Sabres, the Maple Leafs will honour the 50th anniversary of Sittler’s 10-point game with a special pre-game ceremony. Speaking to Toronto media on Tuesday morning, Sittler shared what it all means to him.
“It’s a special day for me to be here,” he said. “Back in October, the team came to me and said, MLSE would like to honour me and celebrate the 10-point game. I thought that’s pretty cool and pretty special. Never realized it would come to the magnitude it is here today, but it means a lot to me.”
For the ceremony, Sittler emphasized the importance of bringing out former teammates from that 10-point game, for playing their part in helping him to this achievement. He also spoke about his wife of thirty years, Wendy Bibbings, who passed away in 2001. Bibbings had held on to her ticket from that game 50 years ago, and Sittler has it to this day.
“The price of the ticket, believe it or not, was 10 bucks,” he said. “It’s an honour for me to bring Wendy into the equation today. She’s such an important part of my life.”
Beyond just being a big moment for Sittler, Tuesday night is also a big game for the Maple Leafs, who are hoping to snap a four-game losing streak to fight back into playoff position. This morning, the team and the players held a private ceremony for Sittler where he was awarded the prestigious J. P. Bickell Memorial Award, recognizing excellence in the Maple Leafs organization. As the players of today face some big upcoming tests, Sittler shared the advice he passed on to them as he reflects on the merits of his own achievement.
“The message I said to the players this morning was, you don’t achieve anything without your teammates,” Sittler said. “You don’t have success. You don’t do it on your own, you do it as a group. And it’s important to realize that.”
Following the ceremony for Sittler tonight, the Leafs will look to make good on that mentality to get back in the win column once again.
