With a point tonight in Buffalo, the Toronto Maple Leafs can clinch their first Atlantic Division title in franchise history.
Even though they’re playing an inferior opponent, it will be tough, though. That’s because the game’s taking place in Buffalo, a place that hasn’t been kind to the Maple Leafs over the past decade.
You just know the Sabres will be ready; we’ll see if the Leafs have that killer instinct in them.
At any rate, that’s where the conversation started on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. On top of that, we discussed Monday night’s card, which included Ivan Demidov’s NHL debut and a weird shootout in Montreal. Also, Los Angeles and Edmonton got together for a dress rehearsal before they do it for real next week.
After that, we previewed game No. 81. Toronto’s 2-0 versus Buffalo this season and have outscored them 11-6. Aside from trying to clinch the division title, milestone watch will be on tonight. Most notably, Mitch Marner needs 1 point for 100. Additionally, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Matthew Knies are all chasing something. Anthony Stolarz will start in goal. The Leafs will dress the same lineup as they did on Sunday. The Sabres have dropped three in a row and are playing out the string.
We did also address the annual NHLPA player poll that was released on Tuesday morning. Hilariously, the biggest poll that Leafs players were attached to was best dressed. Auston Matthews tied David Pastnrak for first with William Nylander placing second.
Courtesy Charm Diamond Centres, David Amber, studio host for Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL on Sportsnet, dropped by the show. We talked Leafs/Sabres, Battle of Ontario, and Toronto’s crease ahead of the playoffs. Additionally, Amber laid out his keys for victory for the Leafs in Round 1 —if they do play Ottawa. Meantime, he anointed Marner as Toronto’s regular season MVP.
Former NHLer/NHL Network’s Mike Rupp will drop by the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We’ll either be highlighting a division title or looking ahead to Game 82 against Detroit.
