Toronto Maple Leafs top prospect Easton Cowan isn’t expected to miss Canada’s World Juniors selection camp next week after leaving Friday’s game against the Oshawa Generals.
Cowan set the OHL’s unofficial record for most consecutive games with a point, recording a point in his 56th straight contest for the London Knights, after one-timing a feed from Sam Dickinson in the first period.
Lauren Kelly of Elite Prospects captured a video of the hit, where Oshawa’s Zack Sandhu crushed Cowan in the open ice.
“We took him out because we couldn’t take a chance,” Knights GM Mark Hunter said to Ryan Pyette of The London Free Press. “You don’t know until the morning (how he will be) but he seems fine that way.”
Oshawa rallied from behind to defeat London 5-3.
“They told me it was shoulder to the chest and their heads hit,” Knights captain Denver Barkey said. “In my opinion, the guy (Sandhu) could have laid off the hit. It’s blindside and dirty. That’s the MVP, the Red Tilson winner and the MVP of the playoffs, and that doesn’t go unnoticed.
“I have faith in Easton. I saw him after the game and you can never count him out. He’s a strong kid. (Sandhu) is lucky that he left the game because he would have had to answer the bell.”
Cowan is widely expected to be one of the key contributors for Team Canada, after recording a goal and two points in five games at last winter’s showcase. He has recorded 15 goals and 28 points in 20 games with the Knights and is one of the OHL’s best players. Cowan was provided with plenty of opportunities to make the Maple Leafs roster out of training camp, and he could be a fixture on the NHL roster by next season.
For the time being, it appears that Cowan avoided a major injury, which is a major relief to Maple Leafs fans, Knights fans, and fans of Canada’s World Juniors team alike.
