The Toronto Maple Leafs are going for the ‘Alberta Sweep’ Tuesday night in Calgary when they take on the Flames, and while there will be plenty of members of Leafs Nation at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Flames’ winger Ryan Lomberg is hopeful the home team can ‘shut up’ the Leafs’ faithful.
Lomberg, a Richmond Hill, ON native spoke with TSN’s Mark Masters earlier today, and with several of the Flames’ players being from the Toronto, ON area, admitted there’s extra motivation to get the win, while also realizing, the arena is going to be packed with Leaf fans. “It will be a good motivation … You want to shut them up for sure so we’ll be looking forward to having a good start & rolling through all 60 here,” stated Lomberg.
“Obviously, grew up watching them, watched a lot of games at the A.C.C growing up. I have a few old teammates on that team now that will be good to see and catch up after the game. But, it’s a big game for our group here, we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
The Flames are exceeding expectations this season, which is one of the many reasons why GM Craig Conroy has been busy on the trade market, bringing in the likes of Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee via trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. Calgary enters Tuesday’s contest with a 26-19-7 record, and are two points up on the Vancouver Canucks for the second wildcard spot.
Calgary isn’t the only away arena that sees a sea of blue take over when the Maple Leafs are in town, as Leafs Nation travels far, and wide. Lomberg is familiar with what to expect, as it was much the same story when he was a member of the Florida Panthers. “Well, I played in Florida, so you know, there were a bunch of blue shirts in the arena when the Leafs would come to town. It is what it is, they have a great fan base.”
You sir, Lomberg, are correct.
