Forget Claude Giroux—The Leafs should target Patrick Kane: Leafs Morning Take

The hockey world is still buzzing over the Leo Carlsson offer sheet.
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what Anaheim will elect to do, but it would be surprising if they didn’t match. That said, it’s a ton of money.
That’s where the conversation started on the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take. Inflation has officially hit the NHL. It’s a classic case of yesterday’s price not being today’s price. Without question, the ripple effects of this offer sheet will be felt league-wide for years to come.
From a team-building standpoint, there’s a lesson here. Clubs have to be better prepared for situations like this. Anaheim clearly didn’t anticipate an offer of this magnitude, and if they do match, they’ll have to move out a few players just to make everything fit under the salary cap.
Naturally, that conversation led us to Gavin McKenna. Yes, it’s years away, but we’re already joking about what his next contract could look like. It’s a good problem to have, right? More than anything, we’re just excited to see the kid play. We also touched on “number gate.” In case you missed it, during his introductory media availability, Sergei Bobrovsky revealed that he spoke with McKenna, who agreed to give him his customary No. 72. As a result, McKenna will rock No. 92 during his rookie season. From there, we debated what an encouraging first NHL season would look like for the highly touted prospect and what realistic expectations should be in Year 1.
On top of all that, we talked about the Leafs missing out on Claude Giroux. Between us, we still think there’s a significant whole on the top line. Long term, we don’t think Jack Roslovic can hold that spot down. Instead, we would love to see the Leafs bring in Patrick Kane. Wishful thinking —probably.
Meantime, we also weighed in on Emil Andrae, Jacob Quillan, and Ryan Tverberg, who all inked new deals with the Maple Leafs over the weekend. Of the three, Andrae seems like the only guy destined to crack the opening night roster. That said, we still don’t really know what he is at the NHL level or where the Leafs ultimately see him fitting into the lineup. Furthermore, we broke down Elliotte Friedman’s latest report that Toronto is still hopeful of adding another difference-maker before the season. Naturally, that led to the big question: Who could that be?
See you you Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET! Craig Berube is slated to join us right off the top of the show. You won’t want to miss that.
