Here are the scoring chances that I counted from the game against the Dallas Stars.  I will be tracking scoring chances for each Leafs game and posting the results here at LeafsNation throughout the season.  You can check out my blog Under the Helmet for results from previous games this season and last season.
The Leafs outchanced the Stars 14-13 in a game that was fairly light on high quality shots.  Read on for the game log, individual data on each Leaf player, and team scoring chance data by period and game state.
There are various factors to consider when counting a scoring chance, but usually a scoring chance is recorded when a shot attempt (that isn’t blocked) is taken from within what is called the prime scoring area, which is roughly a home-plate shape area that goes from within the sides of the goal to the dots in the faceoff circles and then extends straight out to the end of the circle.  See this rough sketch originally provided by Derek Zona at Copper & Blue:

Shots from further out may also be counted based on various factors, one being the amount of traffic in front of the net.
Scoring Chances for NHL Game Number 20298
The first table below is the scoring chance log.  Columns from left to right: (1) Team that recorded the chance; (2) Period; (3) Approximate time remaining in the period when the chance occured (4) Note column.  The logger can make any notes they please here, I typically make note of when a goal is scored or in cases of a high quality chance, the jersey number of the player who took the shot; (5) jersey numbers of the players on the ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs, (for example, #2 represents Luke Schenn); (6) jersey numbers for the opponents; (7) Number of players on ice for the Leafs versus the number of players on ice for the opponents .

The last table shows scoring chances by period and strength. Under each heading, the Leafs’ chances are in the left column and the opponent’s are in the right column.
