The great numerical debate is finally over. Gavin McKenna will wear No. 92 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the 18-year-old revealed, following the end of Saturday’s development camp at Ford Performance Centre. McKenna gave his No. 72 to goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, the goaltender revealed during his press conference Friday.
“I’m going to go number 92. I said that 9 and 27 are up in the rafters and wanted to have a little bit of both in there. So 92, 9 replacing the 7,” McKenna said of his decision.
McKenna signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs on Friday. It is widely believed that McKenna will earn $1.025 million during his rookie year.
“Means the world to me,” McKenna said, about signing his contract. “You know, it’s a big step in my career, so to have my family there and experience it with them is pretty special.”
Although it’s academic, as McKenna enters the league as one of the most gifted offensive prospects in recent memory, it’s still a milestone for the 2026 first overall pick. McKenna was easily the best player in development camp, and spoke about his playmaking ability, while creating space for his linemates, Tinus Luc Koblar and Harry Nansi.
“I think that’s, for me, that’s always been part of my game. I’ve been able to slow it down and pull defenders into me, and find that open guy. I thought we were meshing well. I thought we played well. We could add a couple more goals, but it was fun, and I like those two guys.”
McKenna’s scoring ability, playmaking, change of pace and velocity made him the standout on Thursday, and he’s going to be a franchise player for the Maple Leafs for the next decade. Get ready for the McKennaissance era, where the dynamic forward will be wearing No. 92 for the Maple Leafs.
