Two weeks out from the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, it’s widely speculated that the Toronto Maple Leafs will select Penn State winger Gavin McKenna at first overall. So just what kind of player might the Maple Leafs be getting with McKenna?
Last week, the top prospects available spoke to media at the NHL Draft combine. Among a number of common questions, they were asked who they see as their NHL player comparable. Per Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis, McKenna reports his own as Nikita Kucherov and Patrick Kane, which Ellis broke down:
McKenna (on Kucherov): “I think I play pretty similarly to him. I think we both see the ice pretty similarly and have the ability to slow the game down and speed it up.”From a physical build perspective and, most importantly, from a skill and hockey sense perspective, both players make perfect sense for McKenna. The projected first overall pick has the best hands in the class and has the most elite hockey sense of any forward we’ve seen in recent memory. He has all the makings of a star NHLer – maybe not one who’ll put 50 goals on the board, but one who’ll dazzle with high-quality passes on a consistent basis. Nobody in this draft class can match McKenna’s hands and creativity.
Meanwhile, top international prospect Ivar Stenberg listed his player comparables as Tim Stützle and Lucas Raymond. Defenceman Carson Carels drew a link between himself and NHLers Jake Sanderson and Miro Heiskanen, while Keaten Verhoeff cited Drew Doughty and Thomas Harley as inspirations.
Also notable for Leafs fans, projected first-round pick Elton Hermansson pointed to William Nylander as one of his comparables, along with Artemi Panarin.
“They are two franchise players who (are) the top of the top,” he said. “I think I’m pretty similar, skating-wise, to Panarin, and then all the offensive stuff like shooting and passing and the hockey sense like both of them.”
The first round of the NHL Entry Draft begins at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, June 26 from Buffalo’s KeyBank Center. Rounds 2-7 take place the following day starting at 10 a.m.
