The Toronto Maple Leafs swung their first trade of the John Chayka era on Tuesday morning, dealing goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenceman Emil Andrae, goaltender Samuel Ersson, and a third-round pick in the upcoming draft.
It was a deal that many expected the Maple Leafs to make some variation of, whether it was Woll or goaltender Anthony Stolarz on the way out. Between Dennis Hildeby proving he’s NHL-ready in 2025-26 and Artur Akhtyamov putting his name on the map with his stellar Calder Cup run, the crease was suddenly a position of wealth for Toronto. What wasn’t a position of wealth was the defensive corps, specifically ones who can move the puck. Which is where Emil Andrae came into play.
General manager John Chayka spoke to the media on Monday afternoon following the trade and discussed his belief in Andrae’s abilities to move the puck.
“Emil Andrae is a player I’ve watched for a number of years now,” Chayka told reporters. “Our staff felt good about him. He’s a smart, competitive player, he helps us break the puck out more efficiently. A good puck-mover that can also help join the rush and support offence as well.”
The Leafs’ need to break the puck out better is a real one. Aside from Morgan Rielly and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, the Leafs’ defensive corps struggled mightily with breakouts. Simultaneously, the Flyers had the opposite issue on the back end, with all of Jamie Drysdale, Cam York, and Andrae being undersized. There was an opportunity for a move that aided both teams, and they executed.
Chayka also noted that Andrae’s age (24) played into the deal. The Leafs, at full health, currently have six defencemen over the age of 30, so getting younger in the trade was important to them.
“From that side we’re getting a good young D in an age group, that candidly, we could use some more defence in that age group. So, you know, it kind of satisfied a need there for us. And to add some draft capital as well, as we look to replenish, you know, it checked a lot of boxes.”
The Maple Leafs’ work this offseason is far from over, but on the surface, Chayka’s first deal seems to be one that will address a massive need of theirs.
