Auston Matthews returns, Matthew Knies explodes.
Knies was the story Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena, as his first career hat-trick led the Maple Leafs to a 6-4 victory over the Boston Bruins. From the opening puck drop, this game had a playoff-like intensity. The Leafs were up to the challenge, taking two points from their rivals, and extending their lead atop the Atlantic Division.
Toronto welcomed Matthews back to the lineup after missing the last six games, and the reunited top line of Knies, Matthews and Mitch Marner didn’t miss a beat. The trio combined for 13 points against the Bruins, with Knies and Marner leading the way with five apiece.
Knies was a factor the entire game. All three of his goals were from the high-danger area in front of the net, and his entire toolbox was on display against the Bruins, a team he’s dominated so far throughout his young career. On his first of the night, Matthews fired a pass in front and Knies did the rest, showing off his soft hands with this beauty tip:
Matthews looked great in his return. The Maple Leafs captain played 17:32 on the night, scored a beautiful empty netter thanks to some extra effort, and also collected two assists. Matthews didn’t appear to be labouring at all throughout the game and was engaged physically early and often. There was no hesitation from Toronto’s captain, who made it clear before the game he was ready to return, and healthy enough to play both games of the Maple Leafs’ back-to-back this weekend. It’s certainly interesting timing to come back from a nagging injury when you’ve missed a combined 15 games, and then walk right into two games in two nights.
Back to Knies, while his tip in front for his first of the night was impressive, his second goal to finish off a nice dish from John Tavares may take the cake. 22 years old, 6-foot-3, and warm-buttery soft hands, the future is bright for the Leafs’ power forward:
Besides Knies dominating and Matthews looking as fresh as ever, it was a great site to see Jake McCabe open the scoring Saturday night. The Maple Leafs blueline didn’t score the entire month of December, and became a storyline for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully McCabe’s snipe can spark some others to get involved.
Worth noting Joseph Woll made 26 saves on the night and collected his 13th win of the season. With the Philadelphia Flyers coming to town Sunday, look for Woll to have the night off, and likely Dennis Hildeby between the pipes to finish off the weekend’s back-to-back.
A benchmark win, first in the Atlantic Division, with a roster almost at full strength, the Maple Leafs are absolutely rolling heading into the halfway mark of the season.
