Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly met with the media postgame after the Maple Leafs’ 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night and had to answer questions about his recent struggles.
There’s been a ton of attention circling around Rielly’s game these days, as he hasn’t scored in 10 games, and has just 22 points in 51 games this season. While the numbers may not be as consistent as many are used to out of the veteran blueliner, Rielly reiterated to the media after Wednesday’s game, it’s not due to anything bothering him off the ice. “Trying to keep everything in check, I mean, I feel good, despite numbers, and what not” stated Rielly.
“So, it’s a battle right now, have to try and compete, and play the best I can. That’s what we’re all trying to do,” continued Rielly after leading the Maple Leafs’ blueline in ice time, playing 23:31 against the Wild. “I think we all put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform and I’m no different.”
Rielly’s coming off a 58-point season, meanwhile, he’s on pace for roughly 35 points this season. He’s owed $7.5 million AAV through the 2029-30 season and holds a full no-movement clause. While there’s certainly been an unusual amount of speculation regarding his future in Toronto, head coach Craig Berube knows it’s on the coaching staff to try and get Rielly back on track.
Berube met with the media after the Leafs’ third straight loss and discussed what he’s seen from Rielly of late. “Can Morgan play better? Yes, he can. We all know that. He knows that and he’s trying to work through it right now. It’s a team game. It’s not all on Morgan,” stated the Leafs’ bench boss.
“He knows that he wants to be better and he’s just trying to work through it. And we’re trying to help him. As coaches, that’s our job.”
Rielly and his Maple Leafs teammates now head out west for a four-game road trip, and a chance to spend some time together as a team off the ice. After these four road games, there’s a two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, and a great time for Rielly, and many other struggling players across the NHL, to get a chance to hit the reset button.
