Leafs Postgame: Leafs Lose, ‘Laine’s Better’

Tonight, it was 4-0. Yeah, I said it, and if you weren’t watching: yes, really. That just happened.

THE RUNDOWN

Connor Carrick with the first goal off a James Van Riemsdyk shot, with the secondary assist from Mitch Marner. 1-0 Leafs
Nazem Kadri with the second goal off a beauty play by Morgan Rielly. 2-0 Leafs
Second period saw two goals in 8 seconds, Nylander set up by Matthews. 3-0 Leafs
8 seconds later saw Kadri with his second, set up by Nylander. 4-0 Leafs
Two goals by Winnipeg. First of the season by Tyler Myers off Mark Schieffele. Followed by an unassisted Patrik Laine goal. 4-2 Leafs.
Winnipeg crowd started up a “Laine’s better” chant early in the third, and while Auston Matthews wasn’t the same 4-goal-beast he was against Ottawa… my response to that was still a raised eyebrow and the kind of ‘hmmm’ your mother gives when you try and pass off shoving everything under your bed as cleaning your room.
Third Winnipeg goal, Mark Schieffele with a wrist shot from the top of the circle.4-3 Leafs.
Laine with his second goal of the night, ties it with 54.5 seconds left. 4-4 tie.
Laine with his third goal, completing the hattrick, to win it in overtime. Jets win: 5-4.

BLUE WARRIOR

Kadri takes the MVP of today’s game for me. In a game that for all intents and purposes, should have been won at 4-0 or 4-1, Kadri was everywhere. He scored two goals of his own, but spent the rest of the game generally making a nuisance of himself for the Winnipeg Jets. He successfully drew a penalty against Byfuglien for roughing in the second. The game just needed a few more Nazem Kadris tonight.

SHOUTOUT

Shoutout goes to Patrik Laine. He really is a damn good player. He has a very Ovechkin style of play about him, very larger than life. Big hits, big shots, flashy goals. And Alex Ovechkin is a treasure to watch. I look forward to seeing more of what Laine can do.
