Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Joseph Woll made another step in his recovery by skating with the main group at practice for the first time since being placed on injured reserve. Woll took shots from players during Wednesday’s optional skate against the Los Angeles Kings and has been eligible to return to action since Wednesday.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube listed Woll as day-to-day last week, and while there has been progress made, the team is in no rush to put him back in the fold. Berube indicated that Woll would be back ‘sooner rather than later’ but it’s still a day-to-day designation following Friday’s practice.
“Seems like he’s really heading in the right direction,” Berube said of Woll via TSN’s Mark Masters.
Woll did not tell reporters when he started feeling pain, but he’s focused on the season ahead.
“Little bit of groin tightness and feeling better now. I’m just focused on coming back and helping this team,” Woll said via Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun.
Thursday’s practice saw Woll get some reps in for body movement and positioning, and Berube was pleased with how the goalie has looked in his solo sessions. Given how well Anthony Stolarz has fared to begin the campaign, the Leafs can bide their time and give Woll as much rest as needed before they can put him back in the rotation. It is unlikely he is ready to be a backup for Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers but he could be available as Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning or Tuesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Dennis Hildeby is operating as the team’s backup and he won his first career start against the New Jersey Devils on October 10.
The Leafs are once again making a change on the back end with Conor Timmins sliding back into the top six alongside Simon Benoit while Timothy Liljegren is on the extra pair with Philippe Myers. Liljegren’s season debut left a lot to be desired as he took a cross-checking penalty and the Leafs were outshot 8-2 when he was on the ice. While he did showcase the physicality Berube was looking for, playing fine in one area won’t be enough to ensure he remains in the mix long-term.
As a result of Liljegren and Timmins swapping places, here is how the lines looked at practice via The Hockey News’ David Alter.
Forwards
Matthew Knies-Auston Matthews-Mitch Marner
Bobby McMann-Max Domi- William Nylander
Pontus Holmberg-John Tavares-Nick Robertson
Steven Lorentz-David Kampf- Ryan Reaves
Defence
Morgan Rielly-Chris Tanev
Oliver Ekman-Larsson- Jake McCabe
Simon Benoit-Conor Timmins
Goalies
Anthony Stolarz
Dennis Hildeby
Joseph Woll
Extras
Max Pacioretty, Connor Dewar, Phillippe Myers, Timothy Liljegren, Jani Hakanpaa
The most surprising development is that Max Pacioretty is skating with the extra forwards which suggests he may be scratched on Saturday night. Berube stressed after their win over the Kings that the reason for him keeping Pacioretty out of the lineup on Wednesday was due to having too many options and doing what he felt was best for the team.
Some were wondering how the lines would look should Pacioretty get put back in, but it seems that the Leafs will only make one change to their lineup and it won’t be up front. Things can certainly change within the next 24 hours but it appears he will be sitting in the press box for a second straight contest.
