Logan Shaw scored in overtime on Sunday night to give the Toronto Marlies a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Wolves, and a 2-0 series lead in the AHL’s Calder Cup Finals. Shaw poked home a Vinni Lettieri centring attempt for his second goal of the game, and ninth of the postseason.
Chicago rallied from 3-2 and 4-3 deficits in the third period, including the game-tying goal by Juuso Välimäki. Välimäki pounced on a rebound off the end boards to record his second goal of the game, before Shaw’s heroics silenced the Wolves faithful. While Välimäki’s late tally could have been deflating for the Marlies, Shaw stressed there was no panic in this group as the game entered overtime.
“We’ve been in that spot a lot this year. I’m not saying we’ve blown games, but there were times when we had leads, and other teams would come back, so we’ve been through pretty much everything you can imagine this year,” Shaw said post-game. “I think we have a lot of belief and faith in our group. It’s nice for us to come back in overtime and get that, but when they scored that goal, it sucked at the time, but I still had all the faith in our group.”
After a strong first period by the Wolves, which saw them take a 2-1 lead into the intermission, the Marlies found their stride in the second to give themselves a 3-2 lead. Alex Nylander scored on a penalty shot, faking to his forehand before going backhand to beat Wolves goaltender Cayden Primeau to knot the game up at 2-2 just over four minutes into the second period.
The game remained tied until Shaw scored his first goal of the night with 4:15 remaining in the middle frame. Shaw received a pass from defenceman William Villeneuve, streaked down the wall before cutting to the middle and pulled a backhand around Primeau to give the Marlies a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Välimäki evened the game at three with 11:26 remaining in the third period, but the lead didn’t last long as Bo Groulx banged home his seventh goal of the playoffs. Groulx jumped on a rebound that Primeau was unable to corral after a Vinni Lettieri slapshot.
The Marlies’ first line consisting of Groulx, Shaw, and Lettieri has been a force during the first two games. After combining for five points during Friday’s 4-2 win, the trio went for seven points on Sunday. Lettieri, who picked up three points, including the game-winning goal in Game 1, recorded three assists on Sunday, leading all skaters with 23 points during the playoffs.
“He’s a big-time, big-game player. He was doing that all year for us, and he might not have had the same amount of goals throughout the year, but he was still a big player for us,” Shaw said. “He’s flying out there, and he’s playing great hockey not just offensively. Everyone in that dressing room has bought in, and he’s one of the guys leading the way.”
Villeneuve has recored two goals and 17 assists, and now holds the Marlies’ all-time record for assists in a postseason. He was called up for his National Hockey League debut on April 11 against the Florida Panthers. Following the contest, Shaw spoke about what Villeneuve has brought to the Marlies lineup through these playoffs.
“He’s been awesome. Obviously, he’s been contributing a lot offensively, but the growth that he’s had in these last four years, it’s phenomenal to see,” Shaw said. “He had to be patient early on in his career, and for him to step up in these big games, at big times, I’m proud of him.”
Game 3 is on Tuesday, June 16 at Coca-Cola Coliseum, at 7 PM.
