Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the New York Islanders, the Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned Michael Pezzetta and Henry Thrun to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
It’s possible that Pezzetta and Thrun suit up for the Marlies, who host an afternoon game against the Cleveland Monsters at Scotiabank Arena.
Pezzetta fought in his season debut against the Anaheim Ducks, one second into the contest. The 28-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Maple Leafs on July 2. Pezzetta recorded four goals and 10 points in 37 games with the Marlies. He is positioned as an enforcer at the NHL level, while providing some defensive responsibility, and can be used during defensive zone faceoffs.
“He’s a guy who’s going to bring in lots of energy, good skater, strong skater. We’ll see how it goes,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said of Pezzetta on Thursday.
“Super stoked. Being from Toronto, growing up, all these moments when I was young. It’s super exciting. I could barely sleep last night,” Pezzetta said following Thursday’s skate.
Thrun was acquired in a trade with the San Jose Sharks last summer, in exchange for Ryan Reaves. The 25-year-old did not record a point in four games with the Maple Leafs. Thrun posted four goals and 20 points in 42 games with the Marlies this season. He was called up on an emergency basis for Sunday’s game, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson returning home to Toronto for the birth of their child.
There will be opportunities for Marlies to break into the Maple Leafs’ lineup over the final 12 games of the season. Bo Groulx has made an instant impact as a third-line centre, scoring twice in Sunday’s victory over the Minnesota Wild. Jacob Quillan has operated as the fourth-line centre, and the Maple Leafs are evaluating what their lineup may look line for the 2026-27 season.
