A day after Matt Murray appeared in his first NHL game in 20 months, the Toronto Maple Leafs have returned him to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, while calling up Dennis Hildeby.
Murray recorded 24 saves in Toronto’s 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, to the delight of his teammates and coaches. He played in three games with the Marlies at the end of the 2023-24 season after undergoing bilateral hip surgery. Murray was called up after Anthony Stolarz underwent a procedure mid-week to remove a loose body from his knee, which resembles a small pebble, and will be out for the next 4-6 weeks.
“It was a busy day, a lot of emotions,” Murray said Saturday night. “I tried to keep them in check for the most part, because obviously there’s a game to play. But I was able to take a moment there in warmups and during the anthem and just kind of look around and appreciate the long journey that it’s been and think of all the people who helped me get here.”
Matt Murray won the MVP belt for the Marlies and Leafs in back-to-back games 💪
Hildeby has started three games for the Maple Leafs this season, posting a 2-1-0 record with a .875 save percentage and 3.68 goals against average. The 23-year-old recorded 24 saves in his most recent start against the Sabres on December 15 in a 5-3 win.
Murray already cleared waivers prior to the start of the 2024-25 campaign and is now exempt from waivers, provided that he doesn’t remain on the Maple Leafs’ roster for a total of 30 days cumulatively, or plays in fewer than 10 games with the Leafs during this span. This will afford the Maple Leafs some flexibility with rigid cap space, while allowing for Hildeby to split time with both clubs. Hildeby is roster exempt, and is operating as Toronto’s No. 3 at the moment.
