The long-time GM of the Washington Capitals, George McPhee presents himself as one of the most experienced candidates yet in TLN’s job fair of potential Maple Leafs GM options.

Work Experience

General Manager, Washington Capitals 1997-2014
After making the Stanley Cup Final in my first season as GM, I decided never to do so again. Had a bunch of fun moves inclduing drafting a Russian 1st overall, picked up Braden Holtby in the fourth round, drafted Mike Green 29th overall, and most importantly, picked Tom Wilson 16th overall to provide much-needed energy to team. Oversaw a Joel Ward 24-goal season. Drafted Filip Forsberg. Traded Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat and Michael Latta. (Is there an undo button?)
Vice President/ Director of Hockey Operations/Alternate Governor, Vancouver Canucks, 1992-97
Basically held a bunch of ambigious jobs working alongside such Toronto legends as Pat Quinn, Brian Burke and Dave Nonis, made the ’94 finals. Can thrive on constantly referring to a playoff series my team didn’t win. Left right before Canucks legend Mark Messier came to town, but did get to witness his leadership first hand in ’94.
NHL Role Player, 1983-1989
Played 115 games over the course of seven seasons. Scored 24 regular goals, Joel Ward’s career high… over the course of my whole career. Averaged just over 2 penalty minutes a game. Scored a hat-trick in the 1983 playoffs before I’d played a regular season game. 
College Hockey Star, 1978-82.
Won a bunch of awards at Bowling Green. Didn’t even lead my own team in scoring in my senior year, but won the Hobey Baker Award, lol. Can relate on personal level to top college players who probably won’t do much in the NHL such as Casey Bailey or Tyler Bozak.

Hiring Manager’s Notes

While McPhee seems to have proven the ability to assemble a consistently competitive hockey team and made the playoffs six out of his final seven seasons, he’s also not necessarily a “must-have” guy around on the team. A few questionable moves around the draft that may not necessarily fit into the philosophy that Shanahan & co. have towards their selections. Likes truculence. Probably knows on a general level what he’s doing as well as anyone else, but a matter of if it’s the right fit in Toronto is a whole different question. We’ll call you if we’re interested, George.
