Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll will make his season debut against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, head coach Craig Berube confirmed via TSN’s Mark Masters.
Woll played two games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, working his way back into game shape, after returning from a personal leave of absence on October 24.
“Regardless of what situation I come into, I’m going to have the same mindset, whether it’s game one or the Stanley Cup Final, it doesn’t matter,” Woll said after Friday’s practice. “I think, you know, I’ve realized the importance of consistency in that way and I’m just going to come out and do my best, stick to my routine and things I know.”
“He’s been looking great, today he was unreal,” William Nylander said of Woll on Friday. “He’s been looking really good and it’ll be nice to have him back.”
Brandon Carlo is ruled out of Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury and will be replaced by Philippe Myers. Carlo was granted a maintenance day and did not participate in Friday’s practice.
Easton Cowan will return to the Maple Leafs’ lineup, and will be placed on a line alongside Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy. Cowan was assigned to the Marlies on November 5, but was called up on Friday amid several injuries. The 20-year-old recorded one goal and four assists in 10 games to start the year with the Maple Leafs.
Sammy Blais is a healthy scratch for Saturday’s game.
It was a busy day overall for the Maple Leafs, claiming Troy Stecher off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. Stecher is a 31-year-old right-handed defencemen with good mobility, and could be another option for the Maple Leafs, as they look to find the ideal combinations. Anthony Stolarz was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, retroactive to November 11, so expect Dennis Hildeby to rotate starts with Woll throughout the next week.
