Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll will start Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Stars.
Woll is now operating as Toronto’s uncontested No. 1 goalie after Anthony Stolarz was placed on injured reserve, and will miss 4-6 weeks while undergoing a procedure to remove a loose body from his knee. Stolarz suffered an injury during a Dec. 12 game against the Anaheim Ducks and did not return after the first period.
Through the opening two months of the season, Woll has functioned like a No. 1 starter, posting an 8-4-0 record with a .918 save percentage and 2.24 goals against average. Woll is expected to face the largest volume of starts during his career this season, and will be getting the majority share through January, while Dennis Hildeby is the Maple Leafs’ No. 2 option.
David Kampf will factor back into the lineup, head coach Craig Berube confirmed Tuesday. Kampf has missed a month and last played against the Edmonton Oilers on November 16. He has recorded three assists in 18 games this season.
“It is good. He is a big body there. He did a really good job of killing with (Mitch) Marner when (Auston) Matthews was out. I thought they were really good together,” Berube said of Kampf on Tuesday.
“It gives us more flexibility, for sure. I like his size down the middle. He moves well. He has his job to do, and he has been doing it well.”
Jake Oettinger will start for Dallas. Oettinger and Woll know each other well, stemming from their shared tenure with the U.S. National Developmental Team. Woll and Oettinger won a gold medal with the United States during the 2017 World Juniors,
