The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday morning that they have recalled goalie Dennis Hildeby on an emergency basis from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
This comes after Anthony Stolarz was injured during Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. He stopped seven of eight shots in the first period before the medical staff deemed him unfit to continue, forcing Joseph Woll to take over in relief.
“We’ll know more tomorrow. Lower body right now,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said after the game. “It is concerning for sure. I didn’t see what had happened or anything in the game. Hopefully you get good news out of it.”
While the extent of the injury is unknown at the time of filing, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported on NHL Coast to Coast on Thursday that Stolarz’s injury is ‘not believed to be incredibly significant.’ Calling up Hildeby signals that the Leafs expect him to miss a bit of time, which includes their upcoming back-to-back with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday and the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.
Hideby was the best option for the Leafs to bring up given he was the only healthy goalie available with NHL experience. Matt Murray suffered an undisclosed injury during the Marlies game last Saturday against the Laval Rocket while Artur Akhtyamov is in the midst of his rookie campaign with too many risks involved for calling him up despite his strong play of late.
This marks the second time this season that Hildeby has been brought up to fill in for one of the Leafs’ injured netminders. The first instance occurred on opening night when he travelled with the team to Montreal due to Woll suffering an injury during the end of the preseason. He ended up sticking with the team for a little over two weeks and was used sparingly during that stretch while Stolarz got the bulk of the starts.
Hildeby made two starts during his last stint with the Leafs where he went 1-1-0 (which included his first career NHL win) while posting a .869 save percentage and a 4.03 GAA. Since being sent back to the Marlies, he has a record of 2-2-2 along with a .897 save percentage and a 2.73 GAA across six starts.
