Amid all the drama over the past week surrounding the NHL draft and free agency, the Toronto Maple Leafs locked up one of their goalies to a multi-year extension.
The club announced today that they have signed goalie Joseph Woll to a three-year extension worth $10.98M, carrying an AAV of $3.66M.
Woll, 25, will enter the 2024-25 season in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the Maple Leafs in early 2022 when Kyle Dubas was still the General Manager of the Maple Leafs and was eligible for a contract extension as soon as July 1st.
Originally drafted 62nd overall in the third round of the 2016 NHL draft, Woll finally got a taste of consistent NHL action this past season after just 11 games over two years (2021-22 and 2022-23) playing in 25 games, posting a record of 12-11-1 while recording very respectable number (.907 save percentage and 2.94 goals against average).
Woll has also been able to get in some playoff experience, playing in seven games over the past two seasons, recording a ridiculous 1.78 goals against average and a .933 save percentage with a 3-2-0 record. Over his three-year career with the big club, He has suited up for 36 games for Toronto, posting a 21-13-1 record while putting up a .912 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average.
It wasn’t quite a smooth sailing season for the Leafs’ 2016 third-rounder having gone through multiple injuries in his first full season as a goalie for the big club, but he verified when healthy that he was their best option between the pipes.
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ crease now consists of Joseph Woll for the next four seasons, 2024-25 season, plus the added three years on his extension, as the team will almost certainly look at the free agent market for a tandem partner for Woll.
