The Toronto Maple Leafs and defenceman Philippe Myers have come to terms on a two-year contract extension, worth $850,000 annually.
Myers, 27, originally signed a one-year deal to join the Maple Leafs last July, for the league minimum $775,000. He’s had a strong showing so far this season under Craig Berube, appearing in 11 games, chipping in with two assists.
The 6-foot-5 Myers had been scratched throughout the first part of the season, strictly practicing with the team, but it became obvious how much the coaching staff and management were impressed with his abilities, as they continued to keep in the mix, and away from the waiver wire. Myers outperformed Timothy Liljegren in training camp and has been rewarded for his solid play this season.
Myers has averaged 17:08 of ice-time throughout his 11 appearances, showcasing a strong two-way game, while mostly playing alongside Morgan Rielly. Myers and Rielly have controlled nearly 60 percent of the expected goals at 5-on-5 via Natural Stat Trick.
The Moncton, NB native has skated in 169 career NHL games between the Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Maple Leafs, tallying eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points.
Myers made his NHL debut during the 2018-19 season with the Flyers. Throughout his career, the mobile blueliner has also appeared in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with the Flyers, collecting three goals, and four points.
With Myers locked up for the next couple of seasons, the Maple Leafs now have seven defensemen to multi-year extensions, including Rielly, Chris Tanev, Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who are all signed through at least the 2027-28 season. There’s also Simon Benoit, who is inked through the 2026-27 season, meanwhile Conor Timmins is a pending restricted free agent, and eligible to also sign an extension at any time.
The Maple Leafs get set for back-to-back games this weekend on home ice at Scotiabank Arena, when they’ll host the Boston Bruins Saturday night, and the Flyers on Sunday.
