The Toronto Maple Leafs will be heading outside for their annual outdoor practice at Prince of Wales Park on January 27th.
Save for two years of COVID interruptions in 2021 and 2022, the Leafs have held a special practice at a facility that isn’t the Ford Performance Centre once a year. All of these practices have typically been held at an outdoor rink in the Toronto area, save for a practice in 2017 that was held in Saint Paul, Minnesota and in 2018 when they returned to Maple Leaf Gardens for the first time since 1999.
This year’s event marks the first time the Leafs will be having their outdoor practice not held at Nathan Phillips Square which is where they held it for the last four iterations. Part of the allure was the fact the team rode the subway over to the rink from Union Station which provided fans with a unique opportunity to chat with the players and a photo op, which is one aspect of the event that will be missed.
They will instead be heading over to the Prince of Wales Park, which has an outdoor rink that is a six-minute drive away from the Ford Performance Centre. While they won’t be on the subway, they will instead be at the rink that provides some incredible views of Lake Ontario located behind one end of the ice.
“The Outdoor Practice has become a special tradition for our team and fans, bringing us closer to the communities that support us so passionately,” Leafs president Brendan Shanahan wrote in a press release. “There’s something magical about playing outdoors at local rinks, just as many of us did when we first fell in love with the game. For me, growing up in the neighbourhood, the Prince of Wales rink—with its view of the Toronto skyline and the howling winds off Lake Ontario—holds a special place in my heart. I hope this weekend’s events inspire the same joy and inspiration for the next generation in this community.”
The 2025 Outdoor Practice will be a multi-day event which will consist of watch parties for the Leafs and the PWHL’s Toronto Sceptres on January 25th and an alumni game on January 26th along with many other activities.
