Team Canada announced its men’s Olympic hockey team roster on Wednesday at a press conference, with Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point, Sam Reinhart and Cale Makar previously named to the team.
Sam Bennett, Travis Konecny, Seth Jarvis, Adin Hill and Samuel Montembeault were the five players from the gold medal-winning 4 Nations Face-Off team that were omitted from the Olympic team. Canada is bringing back the same defence corps from the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“The reason going with the eight was scouting, dialogue with the coaches. I think we have great skill level. I think for Parayko and Sanheim, it’s like going through a car wash, it’s hard to get to the net,” Team Canada general manager Doug Armstrong explained, when asked about running back the same defence group.
Five players from Team Canada's 🇨🇦 4 Nations win have been dropped for the 2026 Olympic roster: Sam Bennett, Travis Konecny, Seth Jarvis, Adin Hill and Samuel Montembeault
San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini made the team as a 19-year-old. Celebrini has been in outstanding form and his speed, scoring punch and ability to win board battles ensured his place on the roster. Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was added to the team, after an excellent start to the year, with 19 goals and 37 points in 38 games, and will likely operate in a fourth-line role on the international stage.
Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki was added to the team. Suzuki is arguably the Selke Trophy favourite through the first half of the season, and Armstrong spoke about his ability to handle the pressure of a hockey-crazed market, his ability to play the penalty kill and his overall versatility.
Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard and Dallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston were among the most notable omissions. Bedard was in the midst of an excellent season, prior to an injury that has kept him out of Chicago’s lineup since December 12. Johnston has recorded 45 points in 39 games this season for the Dallas Stars and has built an excellent body of work.
New York Islanders forward Bo Horvat made the team on the strength of a 21-goal campaign, along with some excellent work in the faceoff dot. Horvat could be used in defensive zone scenarios, and will likely start on the fourth line.
I don't feel as strongly as many of you do about the Olympic team, but I would've put Matthew Schaefer and Evan Bouchard ahead of Travis Sanheim and Colton Parayko.
Here is the full roster:
Forwards: Macklin Celebrini, Anthony Cirelli, Sidney Crosby, Brandon Hagel, Bo Horvat, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand, Mitch Marner, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point, Sam Reinhart, Mark Stone, Nick Suzuki, Tom Wilson
Defencemen: Drew Doughty, Thomas Harley, Cale Makar, Josh Morrissey, Colton Parayko, Travis Sanheim, Shea Theodore, Devon Toews
Goaltenders: Jordan Binnington, Darcy Kuemper, Logan Thompson
