Welcome to another edition of NHL Notebook, where we examine current events across the league.
Although summer may be coming to an end, Connor McDavid is still having the time of his life, while the hockey world impatiently waits on every aspect of his contract negotiations. The season hasn’t started yet, and the Los Angeles Kings will be without one of their key additions to begin the 2025-26 campaign. And the next generation of NHL players are getting their initial glimpses of professional hockey, with prospects tournaments underway. Toronto’s prospects team lost 4-3 to Ottawa on Saturday and resumes its schedule against Montreal on Sunday.

Corey Perry will miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing knee surgery

Los Angeles Kings forward Corey Perry will miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Perry suffered the injury during a training skate and he’s expected to miss the opening month of the regular season.
It’s a tough loss for the Kings, as the 40-year-old was brought in to provide secondary scoring and further championship pedigree. Perry recorded 19 goals and 30 points in 71 regular season games with the Edmonton Oilers in 2024-25, before adding 10 goals and 14 points in 22 playoff contests.
Perry signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Kings. The 41-year-old is entering his 21st NHL season and he’s pushing towards the 1,000-point career milestone, with 935 points in 1,392 career games.

McDavid walks up with Morgan Wallen

Connor McDavid’s ongoing contract negotiations are a national subject of interest, with Prime Minister Mark Carney joining the hockey world in daily anticipation of what lies ahead with the Edmonton Oilers superstar. McDavid is still managing to have the time of his life and he joined country music star Morgan Wallen on Friday, walking up with him at Commonwealth Stadium.
Wallen is bringing out a special guest with local ties in each stop of his tour and McDavid could become the next Mayor of Edmonton by a landslide margin, if he so desired. Until McDavid signs a new deal with the Oilers, speculation about his next contract won’t be going away, and a potential homecoming could appear to be even more lucrative. Ahead of the upcoming season, McDavid is doing his best to block out the noise and live his best life.
