We’re only days away from the NHL Draft and general managers around the league are wasting no time this offseason making roster adjustments.
It’s be a wild scene across the league, with multiple top-10 picks getting moved, and there’s no signs of slowing down. Let’s jump into the frenzy of transactions:
St. Louis Blues trade Jordan Kyrou to the Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals have added some significant firepower to their top six, as Jordan Kyrou was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Connor McMichael, prospect Milton Gastrin, and the No. 16 overall pick.
Kyrou, 28, immediately boost the Caps offense. He scored 18 goals and 46 points in 72 games last season, in what was a down year for the speedy winger. He’s signed through the 2031 season at $8.1 million AAV, and had to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.
McMichael gives the Blues a nice top-nine piece to add to their core, as the 25-year-old recorded 14 goals and 46 points in 78 games last season. The year prior he scored 26 goals and has shown some flashes of 30-goal potential.
Chicago Blackhawks acquire Bowen Byram & Jordan Greenway
The Chicago Blackhawks have traded out of the top five at this year’s NHL Draft, as general manager Kyle Davidson acquired defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway from the Buffalo Sabres. The Blackhawks sent the No.4 overall pick at Friday’s draft, along with a 2026 second rounder, and left-handed defenseman Louis Crevier.
The 25-year-old Byram is the main draw, as he should step right into a top-pair role for the Blackhawks. Byram has one year left on his contract at $6.2 million AAV, and was without any trade protection. He’s hoping for a much bigger role in Chicago and should see an uptick in minutes in Chicago, including time on both sides of special teams.
New Jersey Devils ship Simon Nemec to Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames added a young blueliner full of untapped potential on Tuesday, as the team announced they acquired right-handed defenceman Simon Nemec from the New Jersey Devils.
Forward Maxim Tysplakov also is on his way to Calgary, as the Devils receive a package full of future considerations. New Jersey landed two first-round picks, one in each 2027 and 2028, a 2026 second-round pick, and prospect Etienne Morin.
Nemec, 22, had been included in trade rumors for months and it felt like this deal had been in the works for weeks. Nemec appeared in 68 games last season, scoring 11 goals and finishing the year with 26 points. He was originally a number-two overall pick at the 2022 NHL Draft.
Now the Devils are loaded with draft capital, and have been linked to some big names including goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and defenceman Zach Werenski.
Sharks landed No.9 pick from Senators for Eklund, Halttunen and Svoboda
It didn’t take long for Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios to flip the ninth-overall draft pick he acquired from the Florida Panthers for Brady Tkachuk.
The Senators announced on Tuesday they’ve acquired San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund, along with prospects Kasper Halttunen, and Brandon Svoboda. Eklund is the main draw here as the 23-year-old scored 15 goals and 53 points in 78 games last season, and is under contract at $5.6 million AAV through the 2029 season. He was originally the No.7 overall pick in 2021.
Halttunen, 21, scored 16 goals and 35 points in 69 AHL games last season. The former London Knight was a 2023 second-round pick. Svoboda, 21, completed his sophomore season at Boston University in 2026, scoring six goals and 15 points, in 35 games.
The Sharks now have picks No.2, 9, and 27 in the first round and there’s no doubt they’re shopping the No.2 pick ahead of Friday’s draft. Mike Grier wants immediate help and is hopeful to land a proven all-star. If Grier doesn’t find the deal he’s looking for, expect to see the Sharks draft Ivar Stenberg, and wait until later down the draft board to select a defenceman.
In other news, the Edmonton Oilers introduced Mike Babcock as their new head coach, in what was to many, a very underwhelming press conference. There’s growing concerns that Babcock has not made necessary changes, and is bringing much of the same wild tactics to the Oilers’ dressing room.
The Columbus Blue Jackets and Zach Werenski are reportedly going to discuss the defenceman’s future with the franchise after the draft on Friday. Which seems like a very interesting strategy if Werenski does want out, considering how much trade action is on the table at the moment.
Lastly, to wrap up a wild day, the NHL is exploring potential expansion in Texas in either Houston or Austin under an agreement with billionaire Dan Friedkin and his family, Commissioner Gary Bettman stated Tuesday. The total investment required between an expansion fee and the cost of building a new arena in one of those cities would be pushing $3.5 billion.
