From Gavin McKenna making his on-ice debut at Maple Leafs development camp to Portugal and Croatia battling in the FIFA World Cup, Toronto was buzzing with excitement on Thursday.
That’s where the conversation started on the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take as Jay Rosehill returned to the mix. Leafs prospects have been all over the city this week, taking batting practice at Rogers Centre before Gavin McKenna and Alex Bilecki were spotted taking in the soccer match. If you don’t think Toronto’s different, think again.
As for McKenna, one of the biggest talking points to emerge from development camp was which number he will wear in the fall. Although he was sporting his customary No. 72, McKenna said he would gladly give it up if Sergei Bobrovsky wants it.
“He’s a two-time Stanley Cup champion. If he wants it, he can have it.”
It was just another example of McKenna’s maturity and class. This kid is different.
Naturally, we debated what number McKenna could wear if Bobrovsky claims No. 72. How about No. 12? It seems fitting, considering that’s the number the Maple Leafs needed to land the No. 1 overall pick in the draft lottery. We’ll see how it all plays out.
Rosie also shared his thoughts on the Maple Leafs’ busy July 1. All things considered, he liked the moves Toronto made, but acknowledged there’s still plenty of uncertainty surrounding the roster. It’s simply too early to know how everything will come together. We both agreed that Darren Raddysh and Sergei Bobrovsky will be key additions. If they live up to expectations, the Maple Leafs should be in a strong position heading into next season.
At this point, most of Toronto’s heavy lifting appears to be done, though the club could still create additional cap space by moving Morgan Rielly—a move they’re reportedly still exploring. With that in mind, we discussed Claude Giroux after Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reported that the Maple Leafs were among the teams interested in the 38-year-old forward on July 1. That said, we both agreed the fit doesn’t make much sense anymore. Giroux likely would have been more of a fallback option had Toronto not landed Jack Roslovic and Colton Sissons.
Meantime, I got a chance to catch up with new Maple Leafs forward Nick Paul. The longtime Leafs fan reflected on the emotional moment he found out about the deal, why becoming a Maple Leaf gave him goosebumps, and what it means to return home. Paul also discussed embracing the spotlight that comes with playing in Toronto, the role he hopes to fill, reuniting with Darren Raddysh, learning from Mats Sundin, and his excitement to help the Leafs chase a Stanley Cup.
As per normal, we will be scaling back our programming for the summer. Next week, we’re scheduled to do three shows—Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
