Senators HC Travis Green after Game 1: On the officiating: “I thought there was a couple calls they did a good job selling.” On Linus Ullmark’s game being the ‘elephant in the room’: “He’s won a Vezina. He’s pretty good. There’s no elephant in our room.” 🎥@Senators #GoSensGo

Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green knows his team needs to be better if they stand any chance of winning a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he also thinks Game 1 had a lot to do with the Maple Leafs selling some calls.
Green spoke to reporters following the 6-2 shellacking from the Maple Leafs and made some interesting comments about Toronto’s acting abilities.
“I thought there were a couple calls that (the Leafs) did a good job selling,” Green said postgame. “It’s tough on the refs, but we can’t take that many penalties, for sure.”
The Senators had a parade to the penalty box throughout Game 1, tallying 38 penalty minutes. And, while some games you can get away with it, the Maple Leafs made them pay in Game 1, converting on three of six power plays, propelling them to a convincing victory to kick off the Battle of Ontario. It was the first time the Leafs had scored three power-play goals in a playoff game in over 25 years.
The Senators received two power plays of their own on Sunday, but Toronto’s penalty kill was strong, as the Leafs killed off both thanks to a team effort and some stellar goaltending from Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz stopped 31 of 33 shots in the victory.
Green wanted his team to be aggressive and come out on the forecheck, and the Sens followed through, recording 56 hits to the Leafs’ 30. However, it was the undisciplined penalties that ultimately cost them, something Sens’ captain Brady Tkachuk knows the team will need to do a better job at controlling their emotions. “It’s clear as day what the issue is,” Tkachuk said postgame. “We took too many penalties, they scored on it, and that’s the game.”
“That’s on us, we’ve got to be more disciplined. I think everybody’s first-game jitters, nerves, whatever you want to call it, now that’s passed. … Obviously frustrated, but at the end of the day, it’s a new game (Tuesday).”
Although the Leafs peppered goaltender Linus Ullmark for six goals on 24 shots, Green refused to divert any of the blame to his goaltender, quickly shutting a down a question about whether it was disheartening to allow that many goals.
The Maple Leafs and Senators resume the Battle of Ontario on Tuesday. Expect another emotional evening from both teams, with the Sens heading into Game 2 laser-focused on staying out of the penalty box.
