The hot start to 2025 continued over the weekend for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Following back-to-back victories against Boston and Philadelphia, respectively, they’re now 16-7-0 at Scotiabank Arena this season. Overall, they’ve now won four in a row.
With that in mind, we kicked off the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take by dissecting the team at their official midway point of the regular season games. Through 41 contests, Craig Berube’s squad is 26-13-2, good for first in the Atlantic Division. Unsurprisingly, both Rosey and I feel super good about the current state of the team. Meantime, after that, we hit on Toronto’s Quarter Century team that the NHL unveiled on Saturday night. Honestly, whatever. Not much to break down there. Cool initiative, I guess?
Then, we offered up a full recap of the 6-4 win against the Bruins and the 3-2 OT triumphant against the Flyers. To be fair, we spent a lot of time talking about Auston Matthews’ sudden return. The Leafs captain had himself a weekend – just like the rest of his line – tallying one goal and four apples. Matthew Knies returned to beast form, too. He netted his first career hat-trick and finished with four goals and six points on the weekend. Additionally, Rosey weighed in on the Jake McCabe injury, his scrap with Garnet Hathaway, and the play that led to it. It wasn’t pretty.
Brought to you by Charm Diamond Centres, the incomparable Pierre McGuire dropped by the show once again. The long-time NHL coach, executive, and broadcaster was in mid-season form as he weighed in on some very hot button topics like the current state of Canada’s World Junior program. Over and above that, he broke down the Matthews situation, Knies’ overall game, Cowan’s future, and if the Leafs should dabble on Jonathan Toews.
Carter Hutton will be in for Jay Rosehill on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take at 11 AM ET. We’ll preview another battle with the Flyers. Also, the great Eddie Belfour is scheduled to join us.
