According to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, the Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Joseph Woll are working on a three-year contract extension worth between $3.5-4 million per season. Woll has one season left on his current contract, paying him $766,667 in 2024-25 and is eligible to sign a new contract on July 1.

Woll, 25 is coming off another injury-riddled season where he appeared in 25 games, recording a 12-11-1 record, along with a 2.94 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. He reached a new level in the postseason and while he wasn’t named the starter for the beginning of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Woll spelled Ilya Samsonov in relief, then won Game 5 and 6 with back-to-back excellent performances.

Woll suffered a back injury in the final minute of Game 6 against the Boston Bruins and wasn’t available to start Game 7. Toronto is hopeful that a new offseason training program should allow him to stay healthy for the 2024-25 season.

Brad Treliving made it very clear during the team’s end-of-year press conference that the team believes in Woll and are going to do whatever they can to set him up for success. With a multi-year contract in the works, it’s obvious how the organization has big aspirations and given the price point moving forward, still have some flexibility to find Woll a tandem partner this offseason.

From all accounts, it does appear Samsonov is not in the cards this summer and the Leafs will bring in a different goaltender to partner with Woll. With a career .915 save percentage Woll has shown the ability to be a No. 1 starter  and is expected to battle for the starter’s crease come opening night, regardless of who else Treliving brings in this offseason.
