The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly fielded calls to teams interested in acquiring forward Nick Robertson, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
During Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading, Dreger noted that, although it is early in the 2025-26 season, speculation surrounding Robertson’s future has not subsided.
“ The 24-year-old finds himself one more time in a very familiar spot with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he’s hoping for a larger role, opportunity in the National Hockey League,” Dreger said. “ I know that Toronto Maple Leaf GM Brad Treliving has recently talked with clubs that may have some interest in Nick Robertson. Given the depth that the Maple Leafs have, it’s a tough spot for Robertson. Maybe it’s time to give him a fresh start somewhere else.”
This marks the latest rumours for this campaign in regards to where things stand for Robertson long-term in Toronto. NHL Insider Chris Johnston reported on September 9th that the Leafs were open to moving the forward, noting that they were open-minded to the return given their bare cupboard of tradeable assets.
Robertson’s place in the organization has been in question since he put in a trade request during the summer of 2024. That proved to be unsuccessful as no deal materialized, and he ultimately agreed to a one-year extension before the start of training camp. While he was able to move on from the trade request as he made the NHL roster out of camp last year, he was unable to gain a strong foothold in the lineup and barely played in the playoffs.
He then elected for salary arbitration this offseason and was the last one to have his decision reached, but ended up signing a one-year, $1.825 million extension on August 2. While he once again was able to crack the roster out of camp for a second straight season because of a strong showing in the preseason, his spot in the lineup remains far from a sure thing. The difference now is that Easton Cowan is a factor in the Leafs’ plans and was able to force his way into the mix, including getting a chance on the top line in his NHL debut.
“Right now, I can’t speak for what their plans are for me in the future,’’ Robertson said via The Toronto Star’s Rosie DiManno. “What I do know is that I’m here and I’m giving everything I’ve got. I can’t control what the future looks like for me here. I’m just excited to be here, back on the ice. Whatever happens to me is out of my control, so I’ll just go about my business.’’
It is unclear if a trade will indeed come to pass at the time of filing, but the noise surrounding Robertson does not seem to be going away anytime soon. The fact that he is reportedly on the trade block and Treliving is speaking with interested teams does suggest that his days as a Leaf are numbered.
