The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year deal, worth $7 million annually, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Friedman first reported on June 22 that the Leafs would be looking at Bobrovsky as a potential target to upgrade their goaltending in the wake of the Joseph Woll trade. Buzz surrounding the connection never went away from that point on, with multiple insiders suggesting that the Leafs were making a serious push for the veteran goalie in the event that he hit the open market.
Bobrovsky brings ample playoff experience, as he played a large role in the Florida Panthers reaching three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances and two straight Cup wins. The major cause for concern is that Bobrovsky is in the twilight of his career, as he will turn 38 before the start of the 2026-27 season and it’s hard to know exactly how many more years of service he has left as an effective NHL goalie. Then again, it is well known that Bobrovsky has an intense workout routine and takes his health seriously, so perhaps there’s more runway left than we think.
This past season saw him post a record of 27-23-1, a .877 save percentage, a 3.07 GAA, and four shutouts on an injury-ridden Panthers team that missed the playoffs.
With Bobrovsky now in the mix, it once again puts the Leafs in a goalie crunch with Anthony Stolarz, Dennis Hildeby, and Artur Akhtyamov already present. It appeared after the Woll trade that the Leafs would elevate their younger goalies to larger roles, but there were also ample risks that came with the tandem they had at the outset because of Stolarz’s injury history and how unproven the younger options are. One has to wonder if GM John Chayka now opts to leave the crease be or has another move up his sleeve to free up the logjam.
In the meantime, Bobrovsky gets to reunite with fellow Cup-winning teammates in Stolarz, Steven Lorentz, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. It is also worth noting that he spent three seasons with Zach Werenski, who is reportedly willing to be traded to the Leafs. Combine this with the arrival of Gavin McKenna and Darren Raddysh, and the signing of Bobrovsky has certainly changed the makeup of the Leafs going into the 2026-27 season.
