Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander will not play in Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, and is considered doubtful for Monday’s game against the Minnesota Wild, TSN’s Darren Dreger reports.
Nylander was previously listed as doubtful for Saturday’s contest by head coach Craig Berube, following Friday’s practice. The 29-year-old aggravated his lower-body injury during Thursday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. He previously missed six games due to the ailment, originally sustained on December 27 against the Ottawa Senators, and returned to the lineup on January 10 against the Vancouver Canucks.
“He is still getting evaluated. He is doubtful for (Saturday),” Berube said of Nylander after Friday’s practice. “That’s a good question. I can’t answer that. With the last one, I thought it would be quicker, and it obviously wasn’t. We’ll just see how he feels going forward. I can’t really answer that question.”
Nylander leads the Maple Leafs with 48 points (17 goals, 31 assists) in 37 games. If he’s out long-term, it would be crushing for a Maple Leafs team that is fighting for a playoff spot in a hotly contested Eastern Conference race, after a dismal start to the year.
Jacob Quillan is expected to take Nylander’s place in the lineup, via David Alter of The Hockey News. Quillan did not record in three games with the Maple Leafs this season, but he’s been productive at the AHL level, registering eight goals and 27 points in 28 games with the Toronto Marlies.
Toronto is entering a tough part of its schedule, hosting the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, Vegas Golden Knights, Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres in its next five games, following the conclusion of the road trip. Navigating this stretch without Nylander will be a real test for a team that has been able to generate consistent offence throughout the year, as he’s the most dynamic playmaker on the Leafs.
