Rick Vaive doesn’t think Mitch Marner’s built for Toronto: Leafs Morning Take

The post-mortem continues following the latest Game 7 debacle for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jay Rosehill was back in the mix for the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take as we sifted through the marquee news and notes from Tuesday’s locker room cleanout day in Toronto. If you thought it was difficult to watch Game 1 of the Eastern Conference between Florida and Carolina, you’re. not alone. It’s been difficult coming to grips with the Maple Leafs being done.
Speaking of which, it really feels like we’re waiting for another shoe to drop. Brendan Shanahan’s contract is up, but as of Tuesday afternoon, we’re told no decision has been made yet on his future. Having said that, there’s been rumours circulating of a massive board meeting happening on Thursday, so undoubtedly, there should be news coming out of that. Any way you slice it, there’s seismic change coming on up top and likely on the ice, too.
Brought to you by RVezy, we broke down Auston Matthews’ availability. For the first time, the captain confirmed that he got hurt in training camp. Unfortunately, that’s as far as he would go, though. Once again, we questioned that. It’s his right to not disclose that type of information, but honestly, the pros in favour of sharing grossly outweigh the cons. If anything, the secrecy will just fuel more fire.
Additionally, we dissected what Mitch Marner and John Tavares had to say. Weirdly, even though they’re both slated to become unrestricted free agents, the two situations feel very different. Tavares will likely stay in Toronto whereas it really feels like this is the end of the era and we’ve seen Marner play his last game as a Maple Leaf. And Tuesday felt like that, too. We shall see.
Then, courtesy of GRETA BAR YYZ, I had a chance to go one on one with former Maple Leafs captain Rick Vaive. On Monday, the 66-year-old put out a spicy opinion piece in the Toronto Sun outlining why he thinks Marner’s not cut out for Toronto, among hot button topics. Vaive, who thinks Tavares will re-sign, weighed in on the pitiful Game 7 display as well.
For the CRISPI HOT TAKE OF THE DAY, presented by the Ninja Crispi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer, Producer Vick whipped up a very one. After yet ANOTHER disappointing season, he thinks NOTHING should be off the table —including replacing Brad Treliving and Craig Berube.
We’ll be back on Thursday at 11 AM ET. Chat then.
