Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will play Saturday against the Ottawa Senators after being held out of the morning skate. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube elected to give Matthews the morning off for maintenance reasons.
Matthews has recorded 23 goals and 56 points in 50 games this season. It appears that Matthews will be centring a new top line, with Matthew Knies and Max Domi on the wings.
Matthews’ absent from morning skate, will play vs. Senators, Berube shuffles the lines
Berube elected to shuffle the lines during Saturday’s morning skate, which has a domino effect. Bobby McMann, John Tavares and Mitch Marner were paired together, while William Nylander took reps on the wing alongside Scott Laughton and Calle Jarnkrok.
David Kampf was used as a placeholder in Matthews’ absence, and Kampf will be coming out of the lineup Saturday. Nick Robertson will return to the lineup after being rendered a healthy scratch during the past two games, and will join Steven Lorentz and Pontus Holmberg on the fourth line.
Stolarz starts for 2nd consecutive game
Anthony Stolarz will start Saturday against the Senators. Berube provided his explanation after the morning skate.
“I think Stolarz, from the injury, and then from the break, just want to get him some more games here,” Berube said.
Stolarz received shots from Philippe Myers before the practice session formally began, with both Stolarz and Woll wearing the St. Pats’ practice uniforms.
The 31-year-old has posted a 13-7-3 record in 24 appearances with a .920 save percentage and 2.37 goals against average. Although Stolarz and Woll have operated as a true tandem, it appears that Stolarz may be pulling away with a true No. 1 workload as the Maple Leafs prepare for their upcoming playoff run.
