Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares has been formally listed as week-to-week in his recovery from a lower-body injury suffered in Wednesday’s practice, and Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli provided a more detailed timeline on Friday.
Seravalli joined Tyler Yaremchuk on Daily Faceoff Live to discuss a number of topics across the league, and provided a potential timeline for Tavares’ return.
“This one’s been a little more difficult to pinpoint from a Leafs perspective, because they really need to see how the next week to 10 days go, in terms of his healing process,” Seravalli said.
“Obviously, an ugly-looking injury in practice but it sounds like the timeline for John Tavares is going to be somewhere in the 2-to-3 week range. He’s meant a lot to that team this year. He’s played his role almost to perfection and definitely, I think, has set the table to a healthy extension, once the Leafs can get around to it — yes, a pay cut — but certainly something to keep him in the fold with the way he has played. Untimely for them, but 2-to-3 week timeframe is what I was told.”
Tavares suffered the injury in Wednesday’s practice during a power play drill, where he was accidentally clipped by Chris Tanev’s skate and fell awkwardly to the ice. He skated off under his own power and did not return to the practice session. Toronto placed Tavares on injured reserve Thursday and listed him as week-t0-week, while calling up Fraser Minten from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
“It’s unfortunate, in practice, you know. It’s bad luck. It is what it is, we’ve got to move on from it right now,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said Thursday morning.
This appears to be an optimistic projection based on the initial week-to-week designation given by the Maple Leafs. Tavares has been an essential part of the Maple Leafs, recording 20 goals and 42 points in 43 games, while winning 56.9 percent of his faceoffs. If Tavares is facing a 2-3 week timeframe for his recovery, he could return before the NHL’s break for the 4 Nations Face-Off — although it’s possible the Maple Leafs hold him out through mid-February in order for the 34-year-old to fully heal from the injury.
