Simply put, it could be days if not weeks before the 2025-26 Maple Leafs roster really takes shape.
As expected, Brad Treliving and company haven’t done much since the free agent market opened on Tuesday at Noon ET.
At any rate, David Pagnotta filled in as co-host for Jay Rosehill on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Off the top, we quickly recapped Canada Day. League wide, it really feels like a lot of teams are in the same boat as the Maple Leafs. They have money to spend, but right now, they’re in a holding pattern. For what it’s worth, Brad Treliving has $4,983,081 in cap space to work with. When’s the last time this team had this much cap space? All in all, it will be fascinating to see what they do with it.
After that, we got into Toronto’s biggest addition on the opening day of free agency: Michael Pezzetta. You can never have enough depth, right? Ultimately, if Pezzetta can turn into A.J. Greer, the Leafs will be in a really good spot in their attempt to improve their bottom-six. Having said all that, there’s no reason to overanalyze the signing. Furthermore, the Leafs lost Mitch Marner, Pontus Holmberg to Tampa, and Matt Murray inked a one-year deal with Seattle. It will be tough to see Holmberg go. He had a very strong second half of the season.
Made possible by Charm Diamond Centres, fresh off signing a three-year contract extension on Monday, Leafs winger Steven Lorentz dropped by the show. He weighed in on getting some term, staying in Toronto, and what’s it meant to him to play for the team he grew up loving. Additionally, he dished on Marner leaving, the ripple effects of that, and what the Leafs have brought in thus far to fill the massive void. In fact, Lorentz disclosed that he was roommates with Nicolas Roy back in their days with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Then, we got into all the press conference stuff from Tuesday. Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon spoke, so did Marner. They went through the process and how everything came to this. Marner looked very relaxed and chilled out. Good for him. Meantime, Brad Treliving also spoke in Toronto. He wouldn’t comment on negotiation specifics or tampering allegations, so ultimately, not much was disclosed. Of note, Treliving did say that the priority moving forward is to add a top six forward. We’ll see where it goes.
