Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz will start against the Boston Bruins, head coach Craig Berube confirmed via Sportsnet’s Luke Fox.
Stolarz has been in excellent form all season, posting a .928 save percentage with a 11-5-2 record in 19 appearances. The 31-year-old submitted a stellar performance during the Maple Leafs’ 6-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. This likely means that Joseph Woll will get the start Friday against the New York Rangers.
Calle Jarnkrok was skating during practice, and he may be inching closer towards a return to the lineup. Jarnkrok hasn’t played all season and underwent groin and sports hernia surgery in November. Toronto is attempting to optimize its lineup combinations before the playoffs, and Jarnkrok could constitute a steady add to the bottom-six, if he returns to form. He’s still on long-term injured reserve ahead of Tuesday’s game.
It’s also worth noting that the Leafs hold a 2-0-1 record in the season series. During their last matchup on January 4, Auston Matthews returned to the lineup, while Matthew Knies recorded his first career hat-trick and the best performance of his young career in a 6-4 victory.
Boston is without its top two defenders, as Charlie McAvoy is out of the lineup with a shoulder ailment, while Hampus Lindholm is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury.
“If you look at the standings and where everybody is situated, points are crucial,” Berube said following Sunday’s victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. “We talked before the break that we had a back-to-back here and we had to really push to pick up points. The guys have done a good job so far. We’ll go to Boston now, and it is going to be a big game.”
Toronto begins its road trip Tuesday, before taking on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Friday, then conclude the week with an afternoon contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
