The 2025 World Junior Championships was one to forget for Team Canada. Between questionable roster decisions to poor coaching to a generally underwhelming feeling around the team, they seemed to be cursed from the start of the tournament. Needless to say, watching their country get eliminated in the quarter-finals at the hands of Czechia for the second year in a row was a humbling and forgettable experience for the fans, media, and players alike.
The good news is that the World Juniors are in the past. Team Canada has an opportunity to earn some of their credit back at the first-of-its-kind 4 Nations Face-Off, featuring Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland. It’s the first true best-on-best hockey tournament we’ve seen since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey when John Tavares suited up for Team Canada and Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly made up part of “Team North America”, a team with exclusively U23 players. Fast forward nine years, and you’ve got Matthews representing Team USA as captain, William Nylander sporting an ‘A’ for Team Sweden, and Mitch Marner representing Canada.
Canada’s bread and butter at this tournament will be their top-end talent (tell us where we’ve heard that one before). One could argue that they lack the depth and goaltending that Team USA has, but in the end, you can never write off a team with Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Cale Makar at the top. When Mitch Marner is arguably your third-best forward, you’re going to be a threat wherever you’re playing. We haven’t even gotten to Sidney Crosby, who, despite his age, will forever be a threat on the International stage. The team is deep enough that Marner will be on their second power-play unit and despite some underwhelming names at face value in net, they have two Stanley Cup-winning goaltenders on their roster. If they can so much as keep their team in the game, Canada’s got some decent odds of coming out victorious.
Here’s how Team Canada is expected to line up at the tournament.

How is this about the Leafs?
Two words! Mitch Marner. The Leafs superstar will be showcased alongside the best player in the league and one of the best goal-scorers in the league, and head coach Jon Cooper has spoken extremely fondly about the opportunity to coach Marner and utilize him in all situations. Not only will Marner look to help Canada bring home the gold and ease some of the pain from the past two World Junior tournaments, but he’ll also get a taste of high-stakes hockey in the middle of the season. Both of his linemates were in the Stanley Cup Final last season, and his Team Captain has three Cups to his name as well. There’s no shortage of winners on the roster, and the opportunity to play with so many elite players who have gone the distance can only be a good thing for Marner to take home with him as the Leafs look to finally make a significant playoff run.
Prediction:
Call it a biased take if you will, but Canada will reclaim its status as a top hockey nation and win the 4-Nations Tournament. They simply have too much elite talent for the States to handle, and between the modern-day elites like McDavid and MacKinnon and veteran stalwarts like Crosby, they are going to gel and remind Canadians that they have much more to offer on the international stage than they put forward at the World Juniors.
